Who is Satya Nadella, the new CEO of one of the world’s largest and most powerful companies?

Satya Nadella

Hailing from Hyderabad, India, Nadella earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering from Manipal University before moving to the US to gain a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and another in Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

A Microsoft veteran of 22 years, Satya Nadella has had various roles across the company including a stint as Senior VP of R&D for the Online Services Division and President of the Server and Tools Business. Most importantly though, he’s been key in transforming Microsoft’s cloud business.

In his first interview as CEO Nadella speaks about wanting to “ruthlessly remove any obstacles that allows us to innovate”, alluding perhaps to making changes to the executive staff at the huge company that employs over a hundred thousand people. This statement is important because in the past Microsoft has had problems with the corporate culture where the company was made up of competing kingdoms which led to secrecy and fostered a hostile working environment.

His background in engineering (as opposed to Steve Ballmers in mathematics and economics) has led to speculation that with Nadella at the helm there could be a technological renaissance at the Microsoft, with a greater focus on cloud services, pitting directly against Google and Amazon. It remains to be seen though, how he can adjust his skillset to cope with a company that has so many consumer-facing brands.
